An injury to the ligaments in the wrist joint, common after putting hands out to break a fall.
Step-by-Step Guidance
Immobilize the hand. Avoid gripping, lifting, or typing.

Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth to the wrist for 15 minutes to control internal capillary bleeding.

Wrap an elastic bandage around the wrist, beginning at the hand and moving up the arm. Leave fingers free.

Support the arm in a high position, or rest it on a cushion. Keeping it high reduces throbbing.

If swelling is severe, or pain is localized to a single bone, get an X-ray to rule out scaphoid fracture.
