Rapid, spurting, or pooling blood loss that can lead to shock and death in minutes. Requires immediate, aggressive intervention.
Step-by-Step Guidance
Shout for help, call EMS immediately, and press down on the wound with maximum force using clean cloths.

If bleeding is from an arm or leg and is uncontrollable, place a tourniquet high on the limb (2-3 inches above the wound).

If tourniquets cannot be used (groin, armpit), pack sterile or clean gauze deeply into the wound cavity. Press hard.

Lay the patient flat, raise their feet slightly if appropriate, and keep them warm with blankets.

Never let go of the pressure. Keep pushing until paramedics physically take over the patient.
