Airway obstruction in a toddler or child. Requires adapted force compared to adults.
Step-by-Step Guidance
Look for high-pitched squeaks, gasping, or blue lips. Ensure they cannot speak or cough.

Kneel down behind the child to match their height. Lean them forward and strike between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.

Place your fist slightly above the belly button. Perform quick, sharp upward thrusts, being careful not to press on the ribcage.

Keep repeating the 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts. Call out for someone to dial emergency services.

If the child goes limp, place them on the floor. Look inside mouth. Start CPR: 30 compressions, then check mouth, then 2 rescue breaths.

Immediate resolution on clearing
Timeline is typical for uncomplicated healing. Always follow doctor guidance.
