Freezing of skin and underlying tissues. Affected areas look white, waxy, and hard.
Step-by-Step Guidance
Get the patient out of the cold wind and snow. Do not let them walk on frostbitten feet.

Never rub or massage frostbitten skin. This grinds ice crystals into tissues, destroying cells.

Immerse the affected area in warm water (100-104°F or 37.8-40°C) for 20-30 minutes. The water should feel warm, not hot.

Once rewarmed, dry the area gently. Place clean, sterile cotton or gauze between fingers or toes and wrap loosely.

Seek immediate medical attention. Do not let the area refreeze once rewarmed.
